Getting your ATV ready after a long winter's rest

Winterizing is the process of storing off-roading vehicles for colder months. The extreme temperatures can put your powerful vehicle to the test. Proper storage can extend the longevity of the battery, fuel, engine and other components of your ATV. As the weather changes for the better, it’s crucial to undertake certain measures to get your ATV back on the road.

Are you struggling to start your ATV, which has been sitting for winter? Check out the tune-up maintenance that will help get your ATV ready for off-roading adventures.

Drain Engine Fluids

If your ATV has been sitting around for a while, it’s crucial to drain the old fluids. These fluids have probably degraded over the months and may even start to gum up. You should check the gas for a bad smell or darker color, which are typically the signs of foul fluid. Insert a hose in the cutoff valve to flush out the fluid in a bucket. Additionally, gummy fluid can also clog up the fuel line and filter. You should clean out the hose and determine if the fuel filter needs to be replaced.

Next, find the oil drain plug, loosen it and let the engine oil drain in a bucket. After the oil has completely drained, you can replace the filter.

Replace Fluids

When it comes time to replace engine oil, it’s imperative that you only use the right oil. The type of oil will depend on your ATV model.

Charge Battery

Start by charging your battery. If your ATV is relatively new, it should be easy. For a dead battery, use jumper cables to connect your ATV’s connectors to the working ATV’s battery. By revving the engine of the running ATV, you can revive your dead ATV.

Change Battery

On the other hand, an old ATV with an older battery may fail to charge or quickly lose power. If that’s the case, then you may have to replace the battery. After accessing the battery, you can remove it by losing the cables using a socket wrench. If you lack the tools or skills, it would be best to get in touch with an ATV mechanic.

Clean and Replace Air Filters

Inspect your air filter, and if it’s in good condition, you can clean it and reuse it. You can use a brush or vacuum to clear off any debris stuck in the filter. On the other hand, you may need to replace the air filter if it’s not salvageable. Since an air filter isn’t expensive, you are better off replacing it.

Check Spark Plugs

Changing spark plugs may not be necessary, but it’s a good idea to check them before riding your ATV. If your ATV is not getting a spark, you probably need a new plug.

Inspect Exhaust

Despite covering your ATV and storing it in a garage, critters can find a way into the exhaust and build nests. Make sure you take a look into the exhaust and remove any creepy crawlies.
